Our story

CUTTING A LONG STORY SHORT...

Yards and yards of cottons and silks in deep earthy colours and rich designs waiting to be draped. They do paint a striking picture, don’t they? This is what Matkatus embraces wholeheartedly.

Matkatus, based in Chennai, is the house of ethnic weaves from all parts of the country. Our rich range of fabrics, sarees and other handcrafted products are for those who wish to make a subtle statement rooted in simplicity and earthy elegance.

When a question sparked an idea…

We, at Matkatus, are proud of our glorious past that gave the country wonderful weaving techniques.

Our journey is the result of a compelling urge to celebrate the richness and diversity of traditional Indian textiles. The urge was strengthened with a relevant question we asked ourselves. Should our craft lore belong to the past alone; are we doing enough to revive these craft forms? Our answer was a firm NO. We strongly believe that ancient weaving techniques must get out of museums and not simply remain heirloom concepts. Many of our crafts face the threat of extinction and need support to stay alive for generations to come. So we began scouting for genuine hand-crafted fabrics across the country.

What began as a question led to the genesis of the brand Matkatus. And Red Sanders, our company, in June 2013.

Eco-friendly, unique and comfortable, handloom and hand-crafted fabrics definitely get our thumbs up. But we are not content just fanning our desire. We want to tailor a little desi movement by wooing others, like you, to make tussars, kalamkaris, Ikats and ajrakhs an integral part of the everyday wardrobe.

What does Matkatus stand for?

Matkatus, our brand name, is a blend of two of stunning varieties of silks: matka and tussar.

Our collection is eclectic and unique.

Each item at Matkatus is carefully curated and painstakingly picked. Our focus is on handloom and hand-crafted materials that cannot be replicated on a power loom. Hence, our collection is one of a kind.

Only the best of fabrics, produced using ancient weaving methods and craft forms make the cut. Some of these techniques have been passed down several generations of artisan families. We work with national award winning artisans who strive to give ancient techniques a contemporary touch and meaning.

You can choose from a wide range of cotton and silk textiles from across the country in styles such as ikat, kalamkari, bagru, ajrakh, matka and tussar to tailor kurtas, salwars, pants and blouses. Our range of fabrics is targeted at women, men and children. We also have an exquisite array of dupattas and stoles to match any outfit. Our choicest range of sarees includes ikat, tussar silk, Jaipur cotton, Kanchipuram handloom cotton, Mangalgiri cotton, Pochampalli, Maheshwari cotton and Chanderi cotton silk.

Our endeavour is to frequently refresh our collections and pamper our customers with a diverse choice.

We are green and like to co-exist with nature.

Our philosophy is to build a sustainable business. We not only clothe you in elegant ethnic fabrics, but also give you products that are made with a conscience. Our fabrics, sarees, blouse materials and dupattas are made using processes that do not leave behind the ecological footprint.

We are three years today and going strong. We are continuously striving to enhance your experience each time you shop with us. Our mission is to leverage technology to take the beauty of Indian fabrics to the rest of the world. We also want to aid the formation of clusters that give more economic independence and artistic freedom to the artisans, liberating them from the shackles of middle-men.

We need your support to take the Matkatus weave further along the path that rejoices the timeless tradition of Indian fabrics.

We believe this cannot be stated enough: come, make tussars, matkas and ikats a part of your daily wardrobe. Because our fabrics are more than an heirloom idea...

We don't have any other website apart from Matkatus.
